The Smartest Ways to Divide Small Spaces

When you live in a city like Cincinnati, rent can be expensive. Many of us opt for smaller apartments to save money, but there are plenty of ways to maximize the space that you have. Below are eight tips from Furniture Fair’s Design Team on how to divide small spaces in your home and get the most out of what you’ve got!

1. Folding Screens:

These are perhaps the easiest way to section off a portion of a room. They come in a variety of materials and styles, so you can easily find one that matches your home’s aesthetic.

2. Bookshelf Wall:

Adding a large bookshelf perpendicular to the wall can section off a room while providing you with tons of storage space. Tall bookshelves work best because they give the illusion of a full wall.

3. Curtains:

Think of them as thin walls—they don’t take up much space but provide the same sectioning capabilities. You can also create a canopy around your bed using floor-length curtains, which will provide additional privacy to your sleeping quarters.

4. Mirrored Walls:

Nothing makes a room seem bigger than a mirror. If you already have a wall dividing your apartment, you may consider turning it into a full-size mirror to create the illusion of a larger space.

5. Tall Headboard:

Similar to a bookshelf, a tall headboard can create the illusion of a wall as well.

6. Sliding Walls:

While their installation requires a bit more work than just buying a bookshelf or a folding screen, sliding walls provide the best of both worlds by giving you private space when you need it and open space when you want it.

7. Fabric Panels:

Installing a semi-sheer fabric panel also allows flexibility between private and open space. Extra bonus: The panel doubles as a projector screen for late-night movie marathons.

8. Plant Walls:

Bring greenery into your home while brightening it up by creating a plant wall to use as a divider.
